hell of a lot of light for the money, and even if you don't really need all those lumens, it's a great all-rounder

by
The Cateye Volt 1600 is the new daddy, taking what we loved about the Volt 1200 and turning it up to 11. It combines a stonking output with really good battery life, put together with Cateye's usual excellent build quality. At current pricing, it is really good value too; in fact the only question is whether you really need that much light for road use.

In fairness, Cateye markets the Volt 1600 as the light that can handle road, trail and (2015 buzzword alert) gravel use, and as an all-rounder it's a really convincing option. On the road, I rarely used the full 1600 lumen setting, with just the occasional unlit and unfamiliar downhill section warranting it. My commuting and general riding was comfortably handled with the lower-power constant settings and the two flash modes.

The Volt 1600 is Cateye’s brightest stand alone and it’s now a whole lot brighter.

by
Up until a few years ago, having a light that threw out 1000 lumens required a separate battery pack mounted on the frame or bars, yet somehow Cateye has managed to cram in another 400 lumens into its top-tier Volt light, a 33% increase over last year’s model.

Despite the extra power, the Volt 1600 remains the same size as its predecessor and has the same burn times. This has been achieved by ramping up the USB rechargeable lithium-ion battery to 6800mAh, which increases the weight by just 46g to 260g. In real terms this means the Volt will shine for 1600 lumens at almost the two hours quoted – our tests showed it was more like one hour 45 minutes. As you move through the power modes you get 500 lumens for 5 hours, 200 lumens for 15 hours and flashing modes from 12 hours to a claimed 100 hours (however we’d offer a health warning for anyone riding for 100 hours lit by the insanely flickery flash mode).

Even better than the Volt 1200

by - verified purchaser
I have a Cateye Volt 1200 and loved it so much I decided to buy the 1600 and give the 1200 to my wife. The Volt 1600 has all the great features of the 1200 but is even brighter. I use it primarily for Mountain Biking, mounted to my handlebars. It is probably overkill for the road but it really lights up the trail nicely and allows me to rip single track as fast as I do in the day. It is a simple light to use and the mount is really user friendly and will fit any handlebar with ease. In most situation the 800 lumen setting is suitable and will last 4 hours. But the bright setting sure is nice for fast descents.
